What to write in a birthday card: messages for every person and age
The best birthday card messages wish the person a happy birthday, say one specific thing you love or admire about them, and look ahead to the year to come. Below are ready-to-copy messages for friends, family, partners, colleagues and children, plus funny, milestone and belated birthday wishes.
How do you write a good birthday message?
- Open with the wish. “Happy birthday!” is all you need to start.
- Make it about them. Mention a quality, a shared memory or something they achieved this year.
- Look forward. Wish them something for the year ahead, or suggest a plan (“Dinner’s on me”).
- Sign off in a way that matches how close you are.
Two or three sentences is plenty. A long message is lovely for a partner or a milestone, but for most cards short and specific beats long and general.
Birthday messages for a friend
- Happy birthday to the friend who always knows exactly what to say (and when to bring cake).
- Another year of being brilliant. Have the best day – you deserve it.
- Happy birthday! Thanks for every laugh, every rescue and every late-night chat.
- Here’s to another year of adventures, questionable decisions and great stories.
- Life is better with you in it. Have a wonderful birthday.
- Happy birthday to someone who makes ordinary days feel like a celebration.
- Cheers to you! Let’s celebrate properly this weekend.

Funny birthday card messages
- Happy birthday! Don’t worry about getting older – you’re still younger than you’ll be next year.
- You’re not old, you’re vintage. And vintage is very much in fashion.
- I was going to get you something amazing, but you already have me.
- Happy birthday! Remember, the candles are a celebration, not a fire risk assessment.
- Age is just a number. In your case, quite a big one.
- Congratulations on another lap around the sun. Have a lie-down after.
Belated birthday messages
- Happy belated birthday! I’m late, but my wishes are just as heartfelt.
- I didn’t forget – I’m just extending your birthday celebrations. You’re welcome.
- Sorry this is late. I hope your birthday was brilliant and the year ahead is even better.
Short birthday messages
- Happy birthday – have the best day!
- Many happy returns.
- Wishing you a fabulous birthday.
- Cheers to you!
- Have a wonderful day, birthday star.
- Love and birthday hugs.
Birthday card etiquette
- Post in time. Allow a few working days for second-class post so the card lands on or before the day.
- Office cards: sign with your name and a short line; one person’s long message can crowd others out.
- Avoid age jokes unless you know the person loves them.
- Add a gift message if a present is going separately – our gift tag messages have short ideas.
Questions people ask
What is a good short birthday message?
“Happy birthday – I hope your day is as wonderful as you are” works for almost anyone. For a colleague, “Wishing you a fantastic birthday and a great year ahead” is friendly but professional.
What does “many happy returns” mean?
It is a traditional British birthday greeting meaning “may this day return happily many times”, in other words wishing someone many more happy birthdays.
What do you write in a birthday card for someone you don’t know well?
Keep it simple and warm: “Happy birthday! Wishing you a lovely day and a great year ahead.” Sign off with “Best wishes” and your full name so they know who it is from.
Is it rude to send a belated birthday card?
No. A late card is far better than none. Acknowledge it lightly – “Happy belated birthday!” – and focus on your good wishes rather than a long apology.
