New baby gifts: what parents actually want

New parents are buried in newborn-size outfits that fit for a fortnight. The best baby gifts do one of three things: make the next few months easier, last for years, or make the older sibling feel remembered.
Gifts that make life easier
A star named for the new baby
Name a real star. A heartfelt gift they’ll cherish forever. Our sister company, The Star Naming Co., dedicates a real catalogued star to the baby’s name, with a dated certificate (name it the week they’re born), a sky chart and a live viewer to find it. It’s symbolic — stars aren’t officially named this way — but it makes a lovely nursery print and a story for when they’re older.
£9.99 delivered in minutes, or £19.99 printed and posted free in the UK.
Food, delivered
A meal-kit or ready-meal delivery, a supermarket voucher, or simply a stack of home-cooked dinners for the freezer. Ask what they like before you cook.
Clothes in bigger sizes
Everybody buys 0–3 months. Buy 6–12 months or 12–18 months instead and they’ll thank you in half a year. Think about the season the baby will be in that size.
Something just for the parents
A good coffee, a comfortable dressing gown, a babysitting voucher from you, or an hour of cleaning. The baby won’t remember the gift; the parents will.
Keepsakes that last
A book with an inscription
Pick a picture book you loved and write a note in the front: who you are, the date, and a wish for them. Twenty years later, that page is what they’ll look for.
A time capsule
A box with the day’s newspaper, a list of what things cost, letters from family, to open on their 18th birthday. Cheap to put together and priceless later.
Hand and footprint kit
Clay or ink kits for capturing tiny hands and feet. Best given in the first few weeks, while they’re still tiny.
Don’t forget the big brother or sister
A small gift “from the baby” to an older sibling — a book about becoming a big brother or sister, a doll with its own nappy, a special job like choosing the baby’s outfit — helps a toddler feel part of it rather than pushed aside. Visitors who bring something for the older child are always remembered.

A few etiquette notes
- Check whether they have a list before buying big items — they may already have a pram and two baby monitors.
- Keep visits short in the first weeks, and bring the gift with you rather than asking them to collect a parcel.
- Gift receipts are always welcome.
